“Danjoo Yacca – Together Working” country retreat 2025

The “Danjoo Yacca – Together Working” country retreat occurred approximately four hours out of Perth. This gathering brought together men from diverse backgrounds in a remote natural setting to engage in cultural learning, reflection, and hands-on contribution. The event was held over the weekend, with an extended wood crafting camp continuing through to mid-week.

Intention and Focus
The intention of the retreat was to spend time in gratitude for collective and individual On-Country journeys through learning, sharing, dialogue, stillness, and immersion in nature. Participants contributed practically by gathering firewood and sourcing materials for cultural wood crafting.

The remote and peaceful setting offered a valuable opportunity for participants to step away from their everyday environments and reconnect with nature and culture. Camp activities encouraged both reflection and active contribution, with shared meals and conversations reinforcing the sense of community.

Wood Crafting Activities
Following the main retreat, an optional wood crafting camp was held. This component focused on traditional Noongar cultural practices, particularly the making of wooden instruments and tools. Participants crafted items such as:

  • Tapping sticks – used for rhythm and ceremony
  • Boomerangs – symbolising learning, connection, and return
  • Other carved wooden items – developed with care and cultural intention

These sessions supported intergenerational learning and were designed with younger Noongar and Wadjella men in mind. They offered both practical skills and cultural grounding.

Reflection and Outcomes
The retreat fostered a strong sense of gratitude, connection to Country, and respect for cultural practice. The combination of dialogue, stillness, and hands-on activity created an enriching environment for learning and relationship-building.

The experience supported the broader Danjoo Yakka vision of “Together Working,” offering space for personal and collective reflection, healing, and future collaboration.

Conclusion
This retreat was not just a time of cultural engagement but of spiritual recharging and collective contribution. I return with a deeper sense of gratitude, connection, and commitment to continue walking this path with integrity and openness.
