A Celebration of Language and Culture
At Danjoo Koorliny, we understand that language is a means of communication and a powerful vessel for preserving and sharing our cultural heritage. As we walk together toward 2029 and beyond, we are thrilled to introduce a new feature in our newsletter: the Noongar Word and Phrase of the Day.
.
Each edition of our newsletter will now include a Noongar word and phrase, their meanings and cultural significance. This initiative is designed to promote the richness of the Noongar language, deepen our collective understanding, and foster a greater appreciation of Aboriginal culture. We want to create a stronger connection between our community and the cultural practices that have sustained the Noongar people for millennia by learning and using these words and phrases.
.
Language is at the heart of cultural identity. It carries with it the stories, values, and knowledge of our ancestors, profoundly linking us to the land and each other. Through the Noongar Word and Phrase of the Day, we aim to preserve and revitalise this beautiful language, ensuring it continues to thrive and be celebrated by future generations.
.
We invite you to join us on this journey of language discovery. Whether you are new to the Noongar language or have already been touched by its beauty, this feature offers an opportunity to enrich your vocabulary and immerse yourself in the cultural wisdom of each word and phrase.
.
.
For our inaugural word, we begin with a word that starts many conversations: "Kaya" Pronounced kai-ya, this word means "hello" in Noongar. It is a simple yet profound greeting that encapsulates the warmth, respect, and connection central to Noongar culture. By using "Kaya" in your daily interactions, you embrace the Noongar language and participate in the cultural practice of acknowledging and respecting others—a value deeply rooted in Aboriginal traditions.
.
.
In addition to our word of the day, we are pleased to introduce the Noongar Phrase of the Day: "Kaya, wanju" Pronounced kai-ya, wan-joo, this phrase means "Hello, welcome" It is often used when greeting and inviting people into a space, reflecting the Noongar people's deep sense of hospitality and inclusivity.
.
Using "Kaya, wanju" is a beautiful way to make others feel at home and convey the Noongar welcoming spirit. Whether you welcome someone to your home, workplace, or community gathering, this phrase embodies the cultural value of opening our hearts and spaces to others.
.
Why This Matters
