Bunuru Festival 2024
Caring for our World

Our Bunuru Festival 2024 and the festival theme of Culture: Survival, Resilience, Strength and Celebration lead us to honour Yaagan (turtle).

Yaagan is intrinsically linked with kep (water), reminding us of the importance of water to Danjoo Koorliny’s journey towards 2029 and beyond. As we walk together towards the commemoration of WA’s bicentenary, our journey is symbolised not as a straight line but as the Derbal Yerrigan (Swan River), heading towards Walyalup (Fremantle).

Yaagan resides in both salt water and fresh water, connecting all of us across WA and its many tributaries and estuaries.

Our Bunuru festival is celebrating Yaagan. We honour Yaagan as a food and medicine source for Aboriginal people and for its other multiple purposes.

In a contemporary sense, we still honour Yaagan for everything it has been and always will be.
